The U.S. Council for Puerto Rico Statehood is a non-profit education and advocacy organization with a broad-based national membership in 47 states and territories comprised of individuals who support equal citizenship, equality for all Americans and goal and ideal of Statehood for Puerto Rico. Founded in 1998, the Council is dedicated to the education of all Americans about Puerto Rico, its current status within the union of the United States, and why Statehood is in the best interests of all Americans, in the 50 states and Puerto Rico, given the unequal effects of the current status on citizenship, sovereignty and civil rights. The Council's membership hails from throughout the United States and represents the broad spectrum of political points of view and perspectives, all united in the strong belief that Puerto Rico should become a fully sovereign, enfranchised State of the Union with voting representatives in both chambers of the United States Congress on a par with the 50 already-admitted states.
We believe that the second-class variety of citizenship that Puerto Rico's territorial status forces the four million citizens in Puerto Rico to endure is unjust and a blight that should be shed. Puerto Rico should be admitted as a state of the federal Union for clear reasons:
- Statehood is in the best interests of all Americans; in Puerto Rico and the already-admitted states.
- Puerto Ricans have earned the right to equality, equal citizenship and Statehood within the Union.
- The 50 already-admitted states will benefit from Puerto Rico's admission to the Union as a state.
- Puerto Rico and Puerto Ricans will benefit from Statehood and the end of the territorial status.
