The U.S. Council for Puerto Rico Statehood is dedicated to the education of all Americans about Puerto Rico, its current status in the union, and why we believe that granting statehood to Puerto Rico is in the best interest of all the people of the United States, including the 3.8 million U.S. citizens residing in Puerto Rico.

We are an organization of individuals from throughout the country dedicated to the ideal that all citizens are equal. We are therefore committed to change the current status of Puerto Rico, which places the United States in a position of supporting second class citizenship for 3.8 million Americans.

We are equally committed to change the current commonwealth status of Puerto Rico because it is unfair to the other citizens of the United States that must support an economically unsound colonial system.

We are concerned that the U.S. does not practice what it preaches in communicating to the world about the standards of equality and fairness in a democratic society. What we ask of others we do not adhere to ourselves in the case of Puerto Rico.

We are firm in our conviction that when the American people clearly understand the current status of Puerto Rico they will overwhelmingly support equal rights for our fellow citizens in Puerto Rico, rights that can only be gained through full participation in the democratic process as a sovreign state of the union.

We are resolute in our belief that the United States will benefit from the full participation of Puerto Rico in our political system because of the countless positive contributions of millions of Puerto Ricans to our society.

We strongly support the establishment in the U.S. Congress of a process for Puerto Rico self-determination--a process that spells out the specific options, through statehood, independence or other alternatives, with a specific timetable for action, that the Congress will agree to implement once the Puerto Rican people have voted their choice.
